RV Transfer Switches

Campers equipped with a generator offer choices when it comes to powering their 120-volt appliances: using a generator set or via the campground's pedestal. The first option can be very useful when shore power is not available, as you still need to charge 12- or 24-volt batteries or get AC 120V for an air conditioner or other devices. When you're going to connect to the pedestal, the current coming from the generator to the breaker panel should be cut, and the most intuitive and affordable way to do it is to unplug the cord from one source and plug it into another one.

However, in practice, this method is not quite handy, so many RVers go another way – use an automatic transfer switch. Installed prior to the breaker panel, it commonly has two inputs and one output. One input connects to the power cord, another one gets energy from the genset, while the output is linked with the central panel. Once the power from any source is detected, the switch activates the corresponding circuit automatically. If you decide to run a genset when the RV is connected to the pedestal, most of such systems will switch to the generator and cut shore power.
